New York World Ocean Day Art Event 2026

World Ocean Day Art Event Brings Creativity, Friendship, and Ocean Inspiration to Manhattan

On June 8th, Gallery Sojourner in Manhattan once again became a gathering place for artists, ocean advocates, and creative spirits as the annual World Ocean Day Art Event returned under the leadership of April Zhang-Autio.

This year marked the fifth collaboration between Finnish contemporary artist Sini Kunnas and April Zhang-Autio, continuing a tradition that has grown into a heartfelt celebration of art, friendship, and the world’s oceans.

Gallerist April Zhang-Autio and artist Sini Kunnas have known each other around 30 years.

The evening began at 6 p.m. and immediately filled the gallery with warmth, joy, and a sense of wonder. April Zhang-Autio, sparkling in a mermaid-inspired outfit covered in glitter, welcomed guests into an atmosphere that felt both festive and deeply meaningful.

Visitors from various creative fields gathered to celebrate the oceans through art, conversation, and performance.

One of the highlights of the evening was the wearable art presentation by avantgarde streetwear and hip-hop design artist Lord Proverbs. His ocean-themed creations transformed human bodies into moving works of art, bringing marine life into the gallery through maximalistic contemporary design.

The colorful multidimensional garments made from circulated materials and cut daily objects captivated the gallery audience as many jumped into this free cat walk around a gallery evening in Greenwich, New York. Crabs and a lion fish, wine and art speeches.

Sini Kunnas introduced several new works that she had brought from Finland especially for the ocean theme exhibition. Among them was Prayer to the Ocean, a striking piece featuring a plaster mouth attached to the surface with nine connection points.

Kunnas described the number nine as a sacred blessing, an intentional symbol woven into the artwork’s message.

Her new paintings also featured mandalas and vibrant turquoise tones, a color palette that has particularly inspired the artist throughout this year.

The event represents more than an exhibition. It is a collaboration built on mutual trust, encouragement, and a shared belief in artistic freedom.

The three key contributors each bring a unique element to the experience. Of course, without the incredible guests—many of whom are artists themselves—the World Ocean Day evening would not be nearly as memorable.

The artists’ connection has developed over several years, but always at April’s gallery events in New York.

Interestingly, Lord Proverbs first appeared in the audience at one of Kunnas’ solo exhibitions. Known for her intuition about people, Kunnas immediately sensed something special.

“Some artists just have that shine and you know they will rise to success. Only a few have it – but some still do.
Lord Proverbs is one of these few in the whole world.”

Since then, the artists have continued supporting one another via messages across continents and social media throughout the year, always reconnecting around the annual World Ocean Day celebration in Manhattan.

Kunnas values Lord Proverbs’ growing Instagram presence, where he openly shares the realities of studio life during a time when artificial intelligence increasingly shapes visual culture.

According to Sini, several key qualities come together in Lord Proverbs’ artistic journey: the right timing, the right style, the right background, the right attitude, and above all, an unstoppable work ethic. She believes his future recognition may emerge particularly through Europe and hopes that contemporary art museums in Berlin, Spain, or other major European cultural centers will discover the multidisciplinary fashion artist’s remarkable talent.

While Kunnas visits Manhattan only once each year, the annual gathering hosted by April continues to strengthen creative bonds in New York after the June event. The oceans themselves remain the central inspiration annually.

“World seas are an inspiration beyond borders,” Kunnas says. “Every year I choose a theme. Last year it was the great whales communicating with people. This year it was a marine animal called the Venus Girdle, which looks like a one transparent creature’s own little LED show, displaying bioluminescent magic as it curls into a belt shape in the dark waters.”

Sini treasured The Venus Girdle painting so deeply that she carried it in her hands through airport security on her journey home from New York. The artwork drew attention as some travelers stopped to ask about it, and even some of the security staff at JFK were intrigued. Though a little puzzled by the unusual item passing through security, but the artist told the story in the painting.

As the gallery evening unfolded in Manhattan, that spirit of kindness connected every guest, conversation, and performance.

Through fashion, painting, friendship, and shared imagination, the World Ocean Day Art Event once again demonstrated how art can bring people together while reminding us of the beauty and mystery of the oceans that connect us all.

Lord Proverbs switched on his phone camera on Bleecker Street just before the art evening was starting at the Sojourner and asked Sini with a smile.

“What do the oceans mean to you?”, while he recorded a selfie video.

They mean everything,” Sini replied. “The water cycles are present everywhere, even in particles we can’t see. As artists we must unite to speak and create for the seas.”

As she spoke, she reflected on how Lord Proverbs genuinely listens to what matters to her and to fellow artists.

Artists Lord Proverbs and Sini Kunnas meet after two years in New York before the art event 2026.
